Research Project R2: SCI Heart Health and Fish Oil Supplements
Effect of an Omega-3 Supplement Intervention Program (OSIP) on Cardiometabolic Health in People with Spinal Cord Injury
This research project builds off of research project R1. People with SCI are at risk for cardiometabolic syndrome, which increases their risk for many harmful secondary conditions. For the general non-disabled population, exercise and diet would help prevent such conditions. However, people with SCI face many barriers to exercise, and dieting can be dangerous for people with SCI. This research project will test a new intervention specifically selected for people with SCI.
34 participants who have an SCI and who are at risk for cardiometabolic syndrome will be recruited into this study to test the effects of an Omega-3 supplement. Participants will take a pill form of this natural supplement daily for 12 weeks. Assessments, including body measurements and blood samples, will be taken before and after the intervention to determine the effects of the supplement.
It is believed that a diet high in Omega-3 could decrease body fat and the risks associated with cardiometabolic syndrome in people with SCI. This research project will help us find out.
Participants in this study will be recruited from research project R1.
