Peer Support

Overview

The RRTC team is developing an innovative peer support system that focuses on the prevention of medical complications and exercise. The program involves several components:
  • Peer-supported inpatient education on SCI management
  • Peer support groups
  • One-on-one peer mentoring for in- and outpatients

Training

We are currently developing a training concept for peer mentors with the focus on secondary conditions and exercise. Peer mentors at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) and the SCI Network have worked together to create a training concept that is truly consumer driven, need focused, and relatively easy to implement.

Peer Mentor Training Manual

Please review our Peer Mentor Training Manual. We would like to hear from you how we can improve the training of our peer mentors. Direct all comments to Inger Ljungberg at inger.h.ljungberg@medstar.net. Thank you!

Future Developments

We are in the process of developing a "virtual" peer support network. Peer mentors will be available via a-mail and phone to address questions or to chat with people with SCI living in the community. You will be able to post comments, questions, etc.

Check back for resources on SCI peer mentoring as they will become available.
