The purpose of the mini-survey was to look at how individuals with spinal cord injury viewed their current health care insurance providers’ ability to provide for both their needs and their wants in order to live a healthy life. Survey participants were also asked what things they felt would be of benefit to them in increasing both their quality of life and the possibilities of living a healthy life.

The survey results were compiled by ILRU, a partner in the RRTC.

Q1 My healthcare insurance provides everything I NEED to stay healthy and maintain a good quality of life:

Yes   56.41%                                                 No   43.59%

Those respondents who indicated that their needs were not being met were asked to provide further explanation. Of those who took the survey 41% included additional comments to Q1. The most common needs reported as a percentage of that 41% include:

19% reported their Physical Therapy needs were not being addressed.
13% expressed the need for more coverage of Preventative Medicine.
19% conveyed that Personal Care Assistance was not covered.
25% communicated that Assistive Technologies or Medical Device needs were not met.
13% cited a lack of coverage for Medications including bowel program prescriptions.

 

Q2 My healthcare insurance provides everything I WANT to stay healthy and maintain a good quality of life:

Yes   46.15%                                                  No   53.85%

Those respondents who indicated that their wants were not being met were asked to provide further explanation. Of those who took the survey 49% included additional comments to Q2. The most frequent wants communicated as a percentage of that 49% include:

37% reported wanting Durable Medical Equipment such as wheelchairs to be covered.
21% suggested the coverage of exercise equipment & fitness program fees.
16% conveyed wanting the lack of Physical Therapy coverage addressed.
11% expressed a want for more Personal Care Assistant coverage.
