THE DOCTOR IS IN…

……and she has answers to your questions on Osteoporosis and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

What is Osteoporosis? --- It is basically the loss of bone (termed "bone mineral density" or BMD) such that bone becomes thinner, weaker, and more likely to break.

Osteoporosis is fairly universal after spinal cord injury (SCI), meaning that most people with SCI have some degree of osteoporosis, the severity of which depends on factors such as how complete the SCI is, time since SCI, body build, activity level prior to SCI, gender, age, medications taken, and any other medical conditions that might affect bone.

Read answers to questions readers have submitted to a doctor who works in both of these areas of interest - spinal cord injury and with persons who have osteoporosis. Dr. Suzanne Groah specializes in spinal cord injury and is the Director of SCI Research at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC.
